How Long Does it Take to Build an Industrial Hemp Fiber Processing Plant?

If you are staying up to date with the hemp industry in America, you probably know that Hemp, Inc. is in the last stages of reassembling the Temafa decortication plant in the 70,000 sq. foot warehouse of Industrial Hemp Manufacturing LLC, located in Spring Hope, North Carolina. When up and running at full capacity, the plant will be able to process 40 million pounds of industrial hemp fiber processing per year.

It may seem like it’s taking a long time to get the plant up and running, however, the plant reconstruction is ahead of schedule. According to the article, Plains Hemp in the Manitoba Parkland region may soon open its doors for industrial hemp fiber processing. In 2010 the Federal and Manitoba governments announced they would provide $5.3 million in funding for the project. The federal government contributed the bulk of the funding of $4.775 million.

At that time, Robert Jin, President of Plains Industrial Hemp Processing (the parent company), and a Chinese businessman with experience in the textile industry, predicted that the plant would open shortly.

However, the plant’s official opening has been delayed, many times, because of issues with machinery imported from China and failure to satisfy Canadian construction standards. There were also electrical and wiring issues that resulted in the need to re-wire most of the plant at a very high cost.

At this time they are about 75 percent complete – 6 years later. When operational, in 2017, the plant will process up to 40,000 hemp bales per year and eventually employ about 30 people. Plains Hemp plans to process hemp fiber for textiles, building materials, animal bedding and other products.

With the industrial hemp industry speculated to take off this year, Hemp Inc. will be in position with the largest fiber processing plant in America. Even with its processing capabilities of up to 40 million pounds of industrial hemp fiber per year, the company already anticipates completing sales for this inventory long before it is processed. There is a high demand in the U.S. for American made fiber.
